Small interview

Here's a copy of a few question I asked Phillip M. Jackson.  He's worked on many commissioned projects, manages his own comic(s) online, and has done concept art for the newest Banjo & Kazooie game.  You can find his website at http://www.collectedcurios.com/

1) Do you use traditional or computer mediums more when making comics?
Do you use both?

Both, but I do lean more toward digital-only work these days because it speeds up production a little.

2) Of the two mediums listed above, what do you feel are their
strengths and weaknesses?

As I mentioned above; digital work is a little faster, plus you have the ability to undo any mistakes you make. The downside is that a piece of work that has been produced completely on computer will sometimes look a little stiff and rigid because it doesn't always carry that same feeling spontaneity and dynamism as found in a hand-drawn piece.
Traditional methods produce more lively work, but are slower to produce and there is little room for error. If you make a mistake, especially at the inking stage, you cannot easily undo it.

3) What do you think is the hardest part of making a comic?

Planning and writing the script. If you skip this stage or don't do a good enough job; the whole project falls appart.

4) What is your opinion on the amount of webcomics that exist today?

I don't see anything particularly wrong with it. Only those that are produced by people willing to spend time and effort survive for any real length of time anyway, so even with the ease in which they can be created and the sheer number that are out there; it's still easy to find the gems.
